The plight of sex workers
Reading about the plight of sex-workers in India was not surprising but really shameful and shocking(The bedding industry The Week nov 17)
Its tragic that the existance of the sexworkers cannot be eradicated,but we can all contribute in decreasing this menace and the plight,We should put in all our endevours to atleast minimise the number of sexworkers,improve thier living standards,prevent their exploitation and to extend them adequate medical cover
Since most of the girls are inducted into this at a stage or age when they cannot take a decision,and without consent,it is the onus of the parents,society, NGOs,social workers and the government to come forward to their rescue
Parents who cannot afford to bring up a female child due to poverty should consider them as domestic help.There is a great need of maids,domestic help and baby-sitters in the society today.This is a much better alternative fir girls and women being forced to prostitution. They can look forward to a more dignified and respectable living in this situation.
We should not forget that they are the main source of the spreading epidemic of AIDS and hence helping them is actually helping the society and the mankind in general

Mobile phones: lifeline or a cellular circus?
Excuse me for a sec; I have got to take this!” Have you heard it all too often, as if the person’s life depended on it? Cellular phones have taken over the world! In Tokyo, there are two mobile connections per person! Can you imagine that? What could be a logical explanation for this unhealthy gadget fetish? True, we live in an age of modern technology, and cell phones make work easier, communication more efficient, and distances smaller. How many people do you know, who have a cell phone, but actually, reeeeeeaaaalllly need it? Not the kind of person to NOT give credit where it’s due, I would like to congratulate the service providers and phone manufacturers for creating such ludicrous desire for this wireless piece of wonder!
Everybody wants one, or should I say, everyone owns one, not many need one.
If I were to summarize the utility of a cellular phone, a few pertinent queries would arise.I can understand that it is, to an elite few, a very helpful device as far as business is concerned. But were not businesses run before the mobile phone was created? Didn’t we have the Ambani’s and the Tata’s back then? Also, it comes in handy at emergencies. Or does it? Take for example the Mumbai 26/7 deluge or the 11/7 train blasts. Almost all services, barring a few were defunct, chiefly due to the heavy call traffic.
It is nice to gift your mother a phone, as you may probably be the only person she will call. What will ensue? Instead of wishing her or your relative a very happy anything, you shall just send a message, and that shall be the end of it. Has the mobile been connecting people or helping in disconnecting them?
A few years back, if a person was seen with a wireless phone resembling a walkie talkie, people instantly recognized him as a very rich or well to do person. The mobile, sadly has lost its entire ‘status symbol’ quotient!

An online dictionary defines it as ‘any wireless telephone that operates over a relatively large area, as a cellular phone or PCS phone’ which is why it’s called a mobile/cellular phone. It was not an instrument to click high resolution photos with, or a radio, or even a plaything, to begin with. Thanks to all those budding geniuses and MBA’s at manufacturing units, we have phones to send e-mails with, phones to keep us out of the office, and phones that double up as entertainment devices. I, for one, would not love watching football on a mobile phone, and hate it when people come to parties, but either get lost in their cellular world or start sharing data, effectively ruining any chances of human communication.
There are talks of brain damage due to excessive use of cell phones, which are not definite yet, but are a cause of concern.
Making life easier, aiding in effective and continuous dialogue, being fun, when sensibly priced are the pros of a mobile phone, one’s which I enjoy. It’s when the desire exceeds the need, do I start getting jittery. In my view, it is always better to buy a personal computer, which I feel shall be more useful than buying a 3 mega pixel, 8 gb extendable, Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, which shall be out of vogue before you actually discover its many features!
I also have a great storyline for script writers. Mobiles suddenly become intelligent and start taking over the earth, until a simple guy, who has not let mobiles rule his life, saves the world! Although, I don’t think that they have to take over the world, they already have!

Think on it & contact me” says a post by Satisfy…Me on a community named “Pune Anonymous Sex & Amp; call” (2,323 members) dated 25 Jan 07.
These two are just a few of the instances that openly solicit and promote prostitution on a social networking site. This is a mere reflection of the depleting social and human values wherein a public platform is being misused to serve vested interests by a particular section of the society operating around 533 sex-related communities.
Orkut came to India only in Feb 2006 with a mission statement claiming to help people to create a closer, more intimate network of friends and hoping to put them on the path to social bliss. It is apparent from the mission statement that it was established to enable people to interact with each other across the globe by bridging geographical distances. However it has since been used for superfluous activities leading to moral degradation and upheaval. Presently Orkut has open online sexual transactions which have diverse effect on the psyche of the vulnerable lot.
As per the demographic data available on net portal Wiki, India is the third largest user of Orkut preceded by Brazil as numero uno and USA at the second spot. Having countless children as its users it has become a challenging task for their guardians to prevent them from accessing the uninvited content. “I have joined Orkut only to teach my 14 year old daughter to be a safe net surfer and follow the precautions of internet security. Pre-teens and teens is a very vulnerable age” says Prasanna Hullikavi, a lecturer. The reason for youngsters indulging into such activities remains obscure. One of the users says “plzz guys dont call me 4 time pass I need money dats why I m doing dis.” He goes on to add that he charges Rs. 3000 per encounter. On the contrary another user of the community ‘Aundh (Pune) Soft Sex Station’ (205 members) in his posting titled ‘Fun In Aundh’ states “Calling all girls who are seeking fun living in Aundh Area, Lets all enjoy each other and have fun. Both Indians and foreigners are invited to share their contact numbers.”
The gay, lesbian and bisexual communities as well are reaping gold. They offer services for sexual contentment at amounts ranging from 2 to 5,000. With exchange of contact numbers getting rampant one feels disgusted to read in a community named Pune Gays (695 members) wherein a user with the name Gigolo 4punegals states “Gays r u ready? If one teaches me Salsa then I will give him three days of full service.” Besides bare images and uncouth language the evil has clutched communities of schools in trying to lure young students into its trap. “On being informed by one of my friends; I was shocked beyond belief to read a derogatory comment about me and a few others as an anonymous post in my school community. I felt like a butt of joke and only thought about the one who victimized me to relish my pain. Since then I am even scared to log into Orkut,” states a distressed user who prefers to stay unnamed. She is like many others who have gone through an ordeal at various stages for using the site and demanded that it should be banned to prevent such frivolities in the future.
Nevertheless according to a clinical psychologist, Satarupa Anderson, “Banning Orkut like in Iran and UAE will serve no real purpose as it is the human tendency to explore ways which are a taboo. The only remedy to curb the alarming situation is to change the conservative outlook in the conventional Indian families.” “I believe Orkut is meant to stay in touch through scraps as mailing has become boring and long. But it is very unfortunate and despicable to see that people use it for pervert purposes,” says Anna, a budding lawyer.

Credit card recovery unfair method
New Delhi: The RBI has received complaints against various banks alleging harassment and use of unfair means for recovery, government told the Lok Sabha today.
Replying to questions, Finance Minister P Chidambaram said as and when such complaints are received, these are examined in light of guidelines on the subject.
As per RBI Guidelines on Fair Practice Code for Lenders issued in May 2003, it is stipulated that in recovery of loans, the lender should not resort to undue harassment, including persistently bothering borrowers at odd hours and use of muscle power, he said.
The RBI has issued instruction to all commercial banks/non-banking financial companies, excluding Regional Rural Banks, in November 2005 regarding Credit Card Operations, Chidambaram said.
These stipulate that their agents should not resort to intimidation or harassment of any kind, either verbal or physical, against any person in their debt collection efforts, including acts intending to humiliate publicly or intrude the privacy of credit card holders' family members, referees and friends, making threatening and anonymous calls or making false and misleading representations.
